There are indications that government may not be able to meet its September deadline for an end to the load shedding exercise.
Government has assured that measures have been put in place to end the power rationing three months from now.
But the Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei told metro TV's current affairs program, Good Evening Ghana that a more realistic deadline will be end of December. He said even if the power generators currently under construction are completed, it would take sometime for them to be fully integrated into the supply grid.
But Energy Minister Joseph Kofi Addah told Joy News that he is not aware of the issues informing the deputy minister's claims. According to him, any change in plan may be due to lack of funding for the measures government has outlined, and his ministry cannot be blamed for it.
“We have a special committee on energy. The discussion that we had with the technical people resulted in the programme that we gave…the Hon. Deputy Minister was not there at that meeting, whatever reasons he may have had I wouldn’t know. The only thing I can guess is perhaps some of the funding that we need from them if he thinks they can not get that fund before the due date then he may well have some points.”
Mr Addah said though the water level of the Akosombo Dam has reached its minimum level, it is not worrisome.
“We are monitoring the situation closely to make sure that we do not under any circumstances jeopardize the integrity of the dam,” he said.
