The US Embassy in Ghana together with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) brought to an end a three-day leadership and football programme for the Dansoman community.

The event which was championed by the Center for Sports Management and Leadership department of the university was held at the Dansoman AstroTurf with the final day happening on Thursday, July 27.

The programme saw players from Division Three League side Taking Over Football Club and Women's Premier League side, Faith Ladies participate. Students of the New Century Technical and Vocational Institute were also involved.

The programme was also to help the next generation of sportsmen and women to use their roles to have an impact on their respective societies.

"We are working really closely with the players out here to think about the many ways we can use football for peacebuilding efforts. We have been using these days to have the students think intentionally about what changes in their community and how they can come together to do this. They have been brainstorming and they have come up with ideas that can be implemented," the Executive Director of the Center for Sports Management and Leadership department, Carrie LeCron, said.

On his side, the coordinator of the programme, Ian Osei Owusu said: "Now we are realising that sports, skill and life is important. We are realising that we can communicate these things and embed them together.

"The whole idea is to see what these students can gain from these sessions; the sports, the education of it and how to impact lives."

Faith Ladies, who had quite a number of their players at the three-day event also had their Public Relations Officer, Francis Kuarm Mawutor also share his opinion about the project.

"[From this I have learnt] about using sports to show love, using sports to let go and also using sports to pay attention and listen. For me it is important and I am very grateful...It also makes us know that as a lady, you don't need to look like a man to play female football."

Aside from the on-field session, the players and students also had sessions in the class where they were briefed on a variety of topics from the team from VCU.

The team from VCU are also expected to be in Lome, where they will carry out the same programme for young footballers and students in the targetted community.
