The Dansoman police have arrested Benjamin Quansah and Holdbrook Smith, both university students, for allegedly collecting money from people to register them for National Identification Scheme (NIS) cards.The police have been trying desperately ,to track down the alleged fraudsters, following a public outcry that some people were going round collecting money from unsuspecting people to register them for the national identification cards, although the exercise is supposed to be conducted free of charge.The suspects were alleged to be going about collecting a fee of Five Ghana cedis per head in lieu of registration, and this kept the police pretty busy until the culprits were nabbed, following a surveillance laid in the morning of January 16, 2010.Two detectives led by Inspector Ali Tuda were lucky to have had a tip-off that somebody was registering people for a fee at Dansoman Control area, in Accra.The police followed up to the place, disguised as civilians and feigned interest in the deal as Benjamin registered them and collected GH¢5 each from them. He was immediately arrested.A search in Benjamin's wallet revealed eleven National Identification registration forms, and when he was interrogated, he mentioned Holdbrook Smith as the source of supply of the forms. Both of them were arraigned before a district magistrate court in Accra to re-appear.They were charged with obstructing the smooth on-going National Identification Scheme.Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Wilson Aniagyei who disclosed this to The Spectator advised the public to patronise the services of the scheme from only official persons at designated points rather than paying unauthorised fees to register for the identification cards.He cautioned those in this illegal business to stop otherwise the law will catch up with them.Source: The Spectator
