Singer Stephanie Benson has described the Ghanaian music industry as hypocritical.
According to her, the constant critiquing of female acts especially stifles their growth and creativity.
The 50-year-old has come under criticism for her daring dress sense and recent erotic music video with dancehall act Samini in their song ‘One More’.
Several other female musicians have been subjected to criticisms as well for being provocative in their fashion sense. The likes of the late dancehall act Ebony, Efya, Sister Afia and Kakie have had their fair share of scrutiny.
Benson believes such attitude only hinders talents from thriving.
She told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM that, “there are some amazing artistes out there, very amazing artistes, but I think they are just afraid to be themselves….because the people are so judgmental.”
Benson was of the opinion that the industry ought to “allow our artistes to be artistes.”
According to her, freedom to express artistry is the only way Ghanaian artistes can begin to cross boundaries.
The bubbly singer also stated that relative to the Ghanaian music industry, UK’s music industry, where she has worked for several years, accords more respect to artistes.
