The Volta Regional Media Advisory Committee has been officially inaugurated in Ho, with strong advocacy for responsible and objective journalism. The ceremony, held at the Stevens Hotel brought together key stakeholders in the media industry who emphasized the vital role of the media in maintaining national peace and stability.
Most Reverend Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, the Catholic Bishop of the Ho Diocese and Chairman of the Committee led the call for circumspection and objectivity in media practices.
In his address, he stressed the responsibility of the media to ensure that their actions and publications do not disrupt the peace of the country. "The media must be aware of the power they wield in shaping public opinion and the potential consequences of their reports," he said. "It is crucial that this power is exercised with a sense of responsibility and a commitment to preserving the peace we currently enjoy."
The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, echoed these sentiments, urging media practitioners to uphold credibility and accuracy in their work.
He reminded them of the importance of truth and fact-checking, emphasizing that these should never be compromised, regardless of the circumstances. "Credibility is the cornerstone of journalism," Mr Boadu-Ayeboafoh noted. "The public relies on the media for accurate information, and it is our duty to provide them with nothing less."
Mr Kenneth Kpornor, the Volta Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), also addressed the gathering, focusing on the media's role in promoting peace, particularly during election periods.
He urged the media to be diligent in their reporting, ensuring that their coverage is not only accurate but also contributes to maintaining the peace that Ghana enjoys. "As the fourth estate of the realm, the media has a critical role in safeguarding the democratic process," Mr Kpornor stated. "Your reports should foster unity and stability, especially during times of political tension."
The inauguration of the Volta Regional Media Advisory Committee marks a significant step towards enhancing the professionalism and ethical standards of journalism in the region.
The committee is expected to serve as a guiding body, helping to navigate the challenges faced by the media, while ensuring that their contributions to society remain positive and constructive.
The event underscored the importance of responsible journalism in nation-building. The media, as a powerful tool for information dissemination, must continue to operate with integrity, objectivity, and a commitment to the greater good of society.
The newly inaugurated committee is poised to play a crucial role in upholding these values, ensuring that the media in the Volta Region remains a force for good in the years to come.
