The Volta River Authority has opened the spillways of the Akosombo Dam.
The VRA said the spillage has become necessary as the water level in the dam has reached its peak for the first time in 20 years.
The Chief Executive of VRA, Kweku Awortwi who addressed the media after the opening of the dam assured communities living downstream that they will not be affected.
Joy News’ Cyrus De-graft Johnson was at Akosombo to witness the spillage and reported that so far four of the 12 spill gates of the Dam have been opened.
According to him, the National Disaster Management Organisation is on stand-by to rescue any persons that may need help.
The Public Relations Officer of NADMO, Major (retd.) Nicholas Mensah, said the organization had two speed boats for rescue purposes.
Officials of NADMO, according to Major Mensah, were staging a mock rescue exercise in readiness for any eventuality.
He said they will be patrolling the banks of the Dam to monitor the rise of the water levels.
