The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has intercepted over one hundred cartons of smuggled cigarettes with a duty element of over 9,000 cedis between late last year and early this year. This was disclosed by the Wa Sector Commander of the GRA in an interview with Joy News’ Upper West Correspondent Rafiq Salam. According to him, 24 parcels of Indian hemp weighing about 40 kilos were also intercepted early this year. “Narcotics have been very rampant in this region,” he noted, adding, one person has been arrested in connection with the Indian hemp whilst the alleged smugglers have been on the run. The commander was full of praise for personnel from his outfit whose efforts and vigilance have led to the GRA exceeding its target. “The target that was given to the collection for the first four months is 120,000 but the collection has been able to collect 183,872.34. “…Now in terms of percentage this is 53.23 % and this is a no mean achievement for the company,” he said.
