Ghana’s Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has assured Ghanaians that the new administration will prioritise the maintenance of the country’s sports facilities.
The upkeep of sporting infrastructure has been a longstanding challenge in the sector, with many facilities falling into disrepair over the years. Concerns have been raised about the state of venues such as the Borteyman Sports Complex and the need for sustained maintenance to keep them in good condition.
However, Adams is confident that under his leadership, the ministry will address these issues effectively.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for his vetting on Thursday, 30 January, he pledged a renewed focus on facility management.
“Under the leadership of His Excellency the President, we are going to improve upon maintenance culture,” he stated.
“We will not allow any facility to deteriorate to the point where we could even be banned from using it.
“With the very minimal resources we have, we will ensure that we maintain our existing facilities while also building new ones.”
Last year, the Black Stars were forced to move their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan from Kumasi to Accra after CAF deemed the venue unfit to host the game—a situation Adams is determined to prevent in the future.
