The Ghana Federation for Disability Organisations has made a passionate appeal for peaceful conduct of the December 7 general elections.
The federation insisted that Persons With Disability (PWDs) are the worst affected when war and chaos erupt.
The leadership of the disability community wants assurances they will be safe when they step out to vote on election day.
Salient issues bordering on the accessibility and safety of polling stations for PWDs took center stage at the national commemoration of International Day for Persons With Disability held in Kumasi.
Recounting fatalities that characterized the Techiman South and Ododiodio constituency elections in 2020, the President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, Joseph Atsu Homadzi demanded assurances that no person with disability will fall victim to violence in the pending elections.

“If people are shooting guns…..I am a blind person. Where do I run to?” he quizzed.
The theme for this year’s event "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future" bears significance as Ghana prepares to elect national leaders.
The commemoration allowed the Electoral Commission to explain extensively, measures adopted to cater for the peculiar needs of persons with disability in the special and general elections.
Ashanti Regional Director of the EC, Francis Osei Nsia reiterated the commitment of the Commission to ensure the full participation and safety of voters with disabilities in all polling stations across the country.

“We want to assure you that on December 7, we will give you all the protection you deserve…. We have factored you in everything that we are doing,” he stated.
The Akyempenhene of Asante Asokore, Nana Osei Appiah Kubi who chaired the commemoration warned politicians against inflammatory comments capable of breaching the peace of the country.
The annual commemoration of the International Day for PWDs marked on December 3 was this year shifted forward to accommodate the schedule for Ghana's 2024 election.
