The Electoral Commission says it has received only part of the money it requested from government for the conduct of this year's District Level election.
Director of Public Affairs of the Commission, Christian Owusu Parry told Myjoyonline.com the Commission has never received the entire budget for the organisation of elections in Ghana.
His comments follow a statement issued by the Finance Ministry on Wednesday in which the ministry stated it had provided all the money needed for the conduct of this year's district level elections.
The Chairman of the Electoral Commission Dr Kwadwo Afari Djan had told Parliament's Accounts Committee in February 19, 2014 the Commission lacked the necessary funds to organise this year's elections.
He said the October date set for the elections would have to be rescheduled due to lack of funds.
But the Deputy Finance Minister Casiel Ato Forson told Joy News shortly after his Ministry issued the statement that government had paid the EC the full amount it requested for the smooth running of this District level elections.
The amount, he noted, was paid on January 28, 2014."We are of the view that we have actually released the 55 million cedis that the EC requested for and we feel that we should alert the public as well so that the people of Ghana will be assured that it is not an issue of financing," he said.
"They requested for $24,205,752 the cedi equivalent of which is ¢55, 455,377.8," he revealed, adding government has paid all the amount.
But the Director of Public Affairs of the EC Christian Owusu Parry says the Commission has not received the entire budget amount for the District level elections.
While admitting that the Commission received some amount of money from government, Parry he said that amount was used in procuring and maintaining biometric kits for the district level elections.
"We have received some money from the Ministry of Finance but it is not the entire amount that we [will] use for the 2014 elections. We have received part of that amount," he said.
When asked how much was requested for by the EC and how much was provided, Mr Parry said he was not at post and so did not have the detailed figures in mind but was sure that not all the amount requested for was paid.
He said the budget presented to government was not the entire budget for the District level elections.
He said the budget for the District level election is in the region of about 300 million cedis.
Parry conceded that the EC may not be able to hold the elections in October 2014 as initially planned but hoped they will announce the date for the election this year.
