President Akufo-Addo has disclosed that a committee has been established to produce an action plan on how the country can develop and manufacture its own vaccines.
Addressing the nation on Sunday, he said the decision is to reiterate his position in manufacturing local products to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.
He further indicated that former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng will chair the newly established committee.
“I want to reiterate my determination that we should manufacture vaccines here in Ghana. To this end, a Committee has been established under the Chairmanship of the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the world-renowned scientist, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, which is formulating a concrete plan of action towards vaccine development and manufacturing,” the President said.
Meanwhile, Ghana on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 received its first consignment of the newly developed Covid-19 vaccine.
The 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines forms parts of the 17 million doses President Akuf-Addo has targeted by the first half of the year.
However, in his 24th address, President Akufo-Addo cautioned all and sundry to continue to abide by the Covid-19 protocols.
He stressed that the vaccine does not warrant flouting of the safety protocols laid down by the Ghana Health Service.
"We cannot afford to let our guard down. Let us continue to wash our hands under running water, maintain social distancing, refrain from shaking hands and hugging, and, most importantly, wear our masks."
