Manhyia MP Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has stated that the people of Manhyia will vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) whether or not he is alive or kept in prison custody upon the instructions of him detractors. According to him, his people will not be intimidated by attempts to scare them from voting on December 7. This follows a shooting incident at Abirem near Ashtown in the Ashanti Region in which two persons were injured. Supporters of the Manhyia MP have been accused of the crime and Dr Prempeh was on Friday arrested by the regional police but was later granted bail. Commenting on the incident Saturday during a rally, Dr Prempeh told his supporters his enemies want him dead and are thus scheming to hurt him but was confident that all such attempts on his life will fail. He said his opponents – consisting mainly of members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) – having failed to eliminate him have also schemed to get him incarcerated. Dr Mathew Opoku-Prempeh revealed he had been asked to report to the Police CID headquarters in Accra to aid in investigations into the shooting incident but he is convinced that was just a ploy to put him in prison. Not perturbed however, the MP told his supporters not to give in to fear or allow their hearts to waver in the face of his intended incarceration and urged them to press on bravely to ensure the NPP wins the upcoming elections. The NPP Member of Parliament reminded the NDC that Ghana’s first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah was in prison when he won the elections. Therefore whether or not he [Matthew] is in Manhyia, the people will vote on December 7, he pointed out. He said no matter what the NDC does, shooting rampantly in Manhyia, beating up opponents or disturbing the campaigns of NPP, the people will not be cowed into submission. Dr Opoku Prempeh could not fathom why the NDC [as he said] is so afraid to lose the elections while they claim to have put up an unmatched performance during their term in government.
