The woman who engaged in a hot confrontation with officials of Ghana Revenue Authority over tax default was detained overnight at the Kumasi Central Police Station.
Afia Abrafi was handed over to the police when she obstructed a GRA taskforce from closing down her shop in a distress action to retrieve outstanding revenue from tax defaulters.
Officials say the woman owes over 168,500 Ghana Cedis in tax for a period of 2008 and 2013. But Abrafi insists she does not owe that much and charged the taskforce to go retrieve Woyome’s judgment debt money before pursuing her.
Abrafi was granted police enquiry bail Thursday morning to produce documents to prove she has paid a significant part of the debt.
Accompanied by police personnel and GRA officials to her shop, she could only provide old documents that proved otherwise.
Ashanti Regional Police CID says it will go into further investigations before prosecution begins.
Chief Superintendant Peter Baba explains the police will press charges based on the GRA regulations.
Head of the GRA Taskforce, Henry Sam however indicates a charge of impeding tax administration and obstruction according to the internal revenue ACT will be pressed.
He believes pursuing the case will ensure other tax defaulters honour the obligation to the State.
