The Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) is calling for equity in sports reportage as a way of empowering women sports development in the country. Chairperson of the Association, Dr Deborah Cubagee says women sports have evolved, but expressed concern over the seeming trend of discrimination against women sports activities in the country vis-à-vis that of their male counterparts. At a media forum in Accra on Thursday under the theme; “Encouraging, Promoting, Enhancing and Supporting Events of Women in Sports,” Dr Cubagee reiterated the mission of WOSPAG which is “to advise a policy to be deployed that would eliminate all elements that hinder women’s free and full participation in sports; ensure equity and equality, motivate more women to get into sport and facilitate equitable admission of women into higher levels of Sports administration by the year 2020". She was particularly disappointed with the media for showing little or no interest in women sports activities and appealed to the number of media men present to rethink their policy. Dr Cubagee also named harassment, poor acknowledgment of women, and inadequate motivation as some of the teething challenges facing the industry and pledged WOSPAG’s readiness to resolve them. She charged the media to adopt WOSPAG as a product with a potential of unleashing greater skills by women in sports. Deputy Sports Minister, Nii Nortey who was speaking on behalf of the sector Minister Akua Sena Dansua, reiterated the need for equity in sports reportage. Having been a sports journalist himself for a period of 30 years, the deputy minister regretted the traits by sports journalist to ‘hide’ stories about women in obscure corners of the news papers. “If it has to be a back page story put it there. If it has to be a middle page story put it there. If it has to be front page story put it there,” he stated.
