Former Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah has described the resignation of Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen, as 'too late'.

Reacting to the news of the minister's resignation, the former NDC appointee said the move is behind time, given that Mr Kyerematen has already contributed to the deterioration of Ghana's economy.

According to him, Alan and other members of the country's economic management team have collectively sunk the country hence it is too late for him to exit the scene.

He therefore charged the minister to rather stay at post and apologise to Ghanaians for the harm caused.

"Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen it's tooooooooooooooo laaaaaaaaaaattttte, just toooooooo laaaaaaaaaaattttte to resign from this sinking ship.

"This NPP government is in its 7th year, and you've been part of the "SOLID TEAM" that has mismanaged the economy.

"Embrace the responsibilities and apologise to Ghanaians for collectively failing us: as a government and as an Economic (mis)Management Team", portions of his Facebook post on Friday read.

News of Mr Kyerematen's resignation went viral on Friday morning, after multiple sources close to the minister told JoyNews that he tendered his resignation to President Akufo-Addo on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

Rumours of his resignation have been rife, following indications about his intention to contest the NPP flagbearership slot.

It is however unclear whether his substantive resignation is to that effect.

Political journey so far

Mr Kyerematen made an attempt at the leadership of the NPP in 2007, capturing 32.3% of the votes cast.

He was first runner-up to Nana Akufo-Addo who gained 47.96% of votes cast.

Mr Kyerematen made other attempts at the party’s leadership in 2010 and 2014 but placed second to Akufo-Addo, who won the primaries.

In 2012, Ghana nominated Kyerematen for the post of WTO director-general to succeed out-going Director-General Pascal Lamy, and his candidature received the backing of the African Union (AU).

However, he did not make the shortlist for the final selection process in 2013.

In 2017, Kyerematen was sworn in as Ghana’s Trade Minister; a position he has since held prior to his reported resignation from the Akufo-Addo regime.
