Defending Champions, Zambia were held 1-1 by Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in an entertaining Group C match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
The Ethiopians fought from a goal down and a man down to draw level, a result that will surprise the Chipolopolo side who were the overwhelming favourites to win the match.
Collins Mbesuma shot Zambia into the lead on the stroke of half time after a sublime play.
Ethiopia fluffed many begging opportunities including, a penalty and were to rue the missed opportunities later in the game.
The Walya Antelopes, who are making their first appearance after 31 years had their goal keeper sent off for dangerous tackle.
Ethiopia secured the crucial equaliser and it came in spectacular fashion.
Skipper of the side was set up and his perfectly taken low shot took a ricochet of the goal post before entering the net.
The Ethiopians look the better side despite a man down and have wasted some chances as well.
1-1 it all ended in Nespruit, a shaky start for the defending champions.
The Group's other game will be between Nigeria and Burkina Faso
