An 11-year-old girl has given birth to a baby that was reportedly fathered by her older brother.
The child was born in a Spanish hospital to the girl who had been admitted complaining of stomach pains.
Her parents called an ambulance and told doctors they believed their daughter had a serious intestinal condition due to the severe pain she was in.
But upon arrival at the Virgin de la Arrixaca hospital in Spain's Murcia region, doctors realised the girl was in the late stages of labour and about to give birth.
The baby was born before staff were able to transfer the girl to a delivery room, The Local reported, although hospital sources told the website that both mother and baby were ‘doing well’.
Calling the case “exceptional” Murcia's health minister Manuel Villegas said that the region's police and social services were investigating because the baby's father is thought to be the girl's 14-year-old brother.
DNA tests will be conducted to establish whether this is the case.
“We have to wait, there is an ongoing investigation, and when everything is detected and clarified, we will see what happened and if we can help in any way,” he said.
Neither the girl nor her parents, who are all originally from Bolivia, claim to have known she was pregnant Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER reported.
If the boy is found to be the father it is unclear whether he will be charged.
The age of consent in Spain was raised from 13 to 16 in 2013, but underage sex is not punished if the boy is a similar age or stage of development.
The girl is not the youngest to have given birth in Spain. In 2010 a ten-year-old girl gave birth in a hospital in Andalusia.
