Unlike his other colleagues who would want to use their disability as an excuse to beg for alms, 12-year old physically challenged David Amu, has refused to let his disability be an impediment to his dreams of becoming a dancer and computer engineer. David, though is yet to find someone to help him achieve his dream of becoming a dancer and a computer engineer, he has begun on his own by employing his dancing skills to raise funds to pursue his dreams, hoping that a Good Samaritan will come his way. Popularly known in the Dansoman area as Kojo, David last Sunday, August 19, during an outdooring ceremony, boogied to the admiration of the guests. He disapproves of his colleague-disabled who beg along the streets of the city, and told the Heritage newspaper that he discovered his talent for dancing at an early age and never looked back. According to David, he has chosen to always exhibit his talent to all and sundry during occasions like out-dooring and funerals with the hope that one day he would meet a helper who would assist him to achieve his goal. Kojo's predicament according to some town folks was like the days of Noah where descendants faced the penalty of their fathers' sins. They claimed the boy's father, Mr. Kofi Amu, a 'trotro' driver, once hit a cripple with his car but failed to treat him, so the cripple cursed him. But the boy's family has denied the allegation. According to them, Kojo was born a cripple at the Mercy Clinic and doctors suggested immediate surgery but as a result of financial constraints, the family was unable to raise the needed funds to rectify the boy's condition. According to Kojo's mother, Felicia Addo, a tomato seller, she gave birth to Kojo at an early age. Though most of her friends advised her to abandon the boy, she declined, as she did not know the boy's future. She explained that because she left the house very early for the market, she was unable to attend to her son's needs as his predicament called for special attention. She said her husband's junior sister, Bernice Amu, a rice seller, offered to help cater for the boy and even had him to stay at her residence at Dansoman. However, she said, the sister in-law has been facing financial difficulties in recent times and is therefore unable to cater for him. According to the parents, they lacked the necessary funds to enable Kojo achieve his goal. They said what he accumulates from functions is not enough to finance his career. His grand mother, pleaded on behalf of the family to all citizenry to assist her grandson to achieve his aspirations.
