A violent clash in Abunyanya, a farming community in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region, on Sunday, February 1, has left two people dead and several others injured.
Assembly Member for the Abunyanya Electoral Area and Presiding Member of the Nkwanta North District Assembly, Mr Alhassan Abubakar, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the confrontation stemmed from a long-standing land and chieftaincy dispute.
He said the clash resulted in the destruction of property, including houses, shops, and motorbikes.
According to Mr Abubakar, the conflict started when a man from Abunyanya No.1 began developing a parcel of disputed land. Residents from Abunyanya No.2 reportedly tried to stop him, leading to a violent confrontation.
“The District Security Committee (DISEC) quickly intervened and summoned community leaders to resolve the issue. However, the individual continued with his project, ignoring advice, which escalated the situation. Gunfire was reported, resulting in deaths and injuries, and several properties were destroyed,” he explained.
Military personnel later intervened to calm the situation. The Oti Regional Minister, Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, has since deployed additional security personnel to Abunyanya and its surrounding areas to restore order.
