Two persons have been arrested by the Achimota Police for allegedly defrauding a reverend minister of GH¢18, 000 on the pretext of supplying him with gold.
Christian Atsitsogbui and Wahab Iddriss, both 35 and self-employed, were arrested on July 31, 2011 when their victim spotted them at ABC, a section of Achimota.
Narrating the incident to the Daily Graphic in Accra, the Achimota District Police Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Agbeve, said in the early part of 2009, Reverend Kumah, a licensed gold dealer resident at Abofu in Achimota, was in search of gold to buy when he came into contact with the suspects who introduced him to a friend they said could assist him.
He said the accused persons together with one Nana Danso, who is currently at large, met Rev. Kumah at a hotel with a quantity of gold dust.
During that encounter, Nana Danso, who was dressed in a chief’s regalia, was falsely introduced to Rev Kumah as the chief of Apraman, near Ada, who brought the gold dust.
According to ASP Agbeve, the accused persons offered to sell the item to the reverend minister for GH¢35, 000, but he paid GH¢18, 000 in the presence of a witness with a promise to pay the balance upon verifying the authenticity of the gold at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
He said on their way to the PMMC, the suspects boarded a separate car and escaped, compelling Rev Kumah to return to the hotel where he initially met Nana Danso only to be told that Nana Danso had returned to the hotel to check out.
ASP Agbeve said all efforts made to arrest the culprits proved futile until they were spotted and apprehended.
