The Volta Region would be confronted with serious security challenges as the year (2008) rolls on.
The Regional Minister, Mr. Kofi Dzamesi made the observation when Brigadier-General Emmanuel Okyere, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Southern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces called on him as part of his visit to the 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho on Thursday.
Mr. Dzamesi observed that the Eastern frontier would assume a much greater attraction for many foreigners who would be in the country for the CAN 2008 soccer events.
He said some of the foreigners might have other motives other than football for crossing over into the country through the region.
Mr. Dzamesi said the region was however bracing itself to deal with the extra security challenges and would count very much on the military and other security agencies to pass the test.
Brigadier-General Okyere said his visit was to set the security agenda for the regiment for the year, which promises to test the resilience and professionalism of the country's security institutions.
He said the CAN 2008 Cup of Nations tournament, the UNCTAD Ministers conference and the 2008 general elections are all security challenges that needed adequate preparation and mental toughness on the part of the security.
Brigadier-General Okyere said he would establish mechanisms for the regiment and hold regular discussions with the Regional Minister whose support would be crucial for the success of any security arrangements in the region throughout the year.
