The United States continues to be a top destination for international studies among Ghanaian students. 

For the most recent (2020/21) academic year, 4,229 Ghanaians studied at colleges and universities in the United States, a slight increase over last year. 

Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ghanaians showed a strong interest in studying in the United States.  In Sub-Saharan Africa, only Nigeria sent more students (12,860 students in 2020/21) to the United States than Ghana.

The United States is a welcoming destination for international students.  International students study in all 50 U.S. states. 

Of the nearly one million international students who chose the United States this year, more than 50 per cent studied in STEM fields.

Ghanaian student Samuel Kojo Osei, a first-year student at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, is a member of the university’s Chancellor Science Scholars program. 

“EducationUSA introduced me to the numerous scholarship opportunities available in the United States.  To anyone who dreams of an education in the United States…don’t allow yourself to be intimidated…attend one information session.  Never give up because where there is a will, there is a way,” said Osei.

While pandemic-related closures created a significant buildup of demand for all types of visas worldwide, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana is working to answer this demand as quickly as possible while ensuring the safety of our staff and applicants. 

After immigrant visas, the Department of State continues to prioritize student visas to ensure that qualified students travel in time for their academic programs.
