The family of 26-year-old Emmanuel Nii Odartey, who was severely beaten up by two police constables at Agona Swedru in 2005, is appealing to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Attorney General (AG) for justice in the matter.Emmanuel received a severe beating at the hands of two police constables, Francis Taagar and Samuel Nketia, at Agona Swedru, for allegedly selling one of them bad quality batteries.The police officers beat him up and hanged him to a ceiling by handcuffs, leading to a complete loss of hearing in his left ear and partial loss in the right.The family dragged the police service and the former IGP to court, but due to long adjournments and inability of Mr Patrick Acheampong to appear in court, the case never reached a conclusion.Several years on, the victim's brother, Isaac Odartey (who visited Joy FM's studio) says the family has run out of options and is no longer able to bear the cost of Emmanuel’s medical expenses.“They [don’t] pay any hospital bill for us,” Mr Odartey said.The two constables were found guilty and ordered by the Police Service to pay a compensation of GH¢800, of which only 300 has been paid.Checks at the Swedru Divisional Police Command confirm the two officers have since been on interdiction, but no criminal charges have been brought against them yet, as the Attorney General is yet to advice the Police Service on the next line of action in the case.
