The Omanhene of Baka Traditional Area in the Sene East District of the Brong Ahafo Region, Nana Owusu Sakyi III has disclosed that about 3 pregnant women died in labour this year due to the bad state of the roads in the area. He said maternal mortality in Kwame Danso and its environs is generally on the rise due to bad roads. Nana Sakyi III who was speaking on Adom News noted that pregnant women in labour are usually carried on bicycles for miles because vehicle avoid coming to the are due to the nature of the roads. Earlier this year, President John Dramani Mahama affirmed that the governments was resolved to collaborate with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other relevant bodies to drastically reduce maternal mortality rate in the country. He said the aim was to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target of 185 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2015. But Nana Sakyi III stated that the government may not achieve the MDG-5 due to situations like what he and his people are enduring right now. Nana Sakyi III stated that commercial vehicles and traders who transport food stuff from the district to other districts always get stuck in mud, and that is affecting businesses badly. The chief indicated lots of vehicles are broken down in the area due to the same problem, and the lifespan of other vehicles are also under serious threat. Nana Owusu Sakyi III said school children also find it very difficult to use the road. He recalled that the late President John Mills awarded contract for the construction of that roads but since his demise, nothing has been done about the roads. The chief said since the Sene East District was created, there has not been a DCE supervise the development of the district, so he is calling on the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Administration to intervene so the district can get a sense of direction for development. The Presiding Member for Sene East District Assembly, Mr. Johnson Oduro Yeboah confirmed the situation to Adom News adding that the roads had been awarded for reconstruction but work has not yet begun. Mr. Yeboah said both the Sene East and West District Assemblies currently depend on internally-generated funds to patch the rough roads in the area to save lives.
