Police in Ejisu in the Ashanti Region have arrested five protestors for pelting stones at police officers during a demonstration at the chief’s palace.

The arrested persons include two males and three females.

The demonstration which started early Friday morning by residents was against the Municipal Chief Executive of the area Yamoah Ponkoh and the Chief of Ejisu, Oguakuro Afrane Okesse IV.

The protestors accuse the two individuals of embarking on some development projects they claim were inimical to them.

They are also protesting against what they say is the lack of a parking lot in the town.

Joy News’ Ohemeng Tawiah who is at the scene reports that the residents are against the expansion of the Ejisu market which they say will deprive residents of their livelihood.

The demonstrators accuse the two men of being behind that project.

According to Ohemeng Tawiah the demonstration was peaceful until the demonstrators got to the palace of Ejisumanhene where police had barricaded to prevent  entry.

The police had received information the protestors will not use the approved routes spelt out in the demonstration so they took proactive measures by barricading some vital institutions including the chief's palace.

Despite the barricades at the chief's palace, the demonstrators wanted to enter into the chief's palace and when they were prevented they started throwing stones at the police and demanded that they are allowed entry.

The police then fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators who had turned violent.

The Ejisu police, Tawiah said, have called for reinforcement with armoured cars and riot policemen already at the location to keep peace.

The demonstrators before arriving at the chief’s palace demonstrated at the Municipal Assembly office.
