Five policemen are on the run and have been declared wanted by the authorities for their involvement in the robbery of 10 kegs of mercury.
One other policeman, Lance Corporal Charles Grantson, 32, has been arrested together with two civilians, Owureku Amofa Appiah, 32, a car dealer, and Odum Danso, 32, a taxi driver.
ACP Emmanuel Bosso, Tesano Divisional Police Commander, who briefed the Times, said two other persons, considered as the principal actors are also on the run.
They are Frank Odai (alias Borga) and Kofi Adjei.
ACP Bosso said Samuel and Kofi Larbi, both siblings, were sent on errands by a licensed mercury dealer at Teshie, to deliver four kegs of mercury to Odai at the Haatso filling station at West Legon.
On their arrival, Odai told them that it was late and suggested that they should meet the following day, Friday, behind the Pure Fire Miracles Church, at Haatso, to transact the business.
Odai was also alleged to have requested them to bring three more kegs, to which they obliged.
However, on their arrival at the scheduled meeting place with the seven kegs, Odai again requested for three more kegs to total 10, each costing GH¢ 100,000.00. They were compelled to go back to Teshie for the extra three.
ACP Bosso said when the men arrived for the transaction, five policemen in uniform emerged from two taxi cabs, while Grantson, in plain-clothes arrived on a motorbike and told the man that they were under arrest for carrying unlawful items.
The policemen allegedly beat up Samuel and Kofi together with the taxi driver they had hired, and subsequently took them away towards the Achimota Police station.
However, on their way, the policemen collected all the 10 kegs together with moneys on the brothers, and forced them out of the car, ordering them to go home.
Mr. Bosso said the victims reported the matter to the Tesano police. The taxi driver told the police that he knew Grantson and, therefore, led a team of policemen to Teshie where he was arrested.
Grantson, however, denied knowing the other five policemen, claiming that he was invited by Odai to witness the transaction between him and the Larbis.
ACP Bosso said when the police went to Odai's house, he had absconded.
On hearing that he was being sought for, Odai called the police on phone on Saturday, saying that he had left the 10 kegs at a garage near the Tesano police station.
The police went to the place and found the items.
