Customers of Barclays Bank and the general public can now deposit monies with the institution outside the normal working hours. This follows the introduction of some 30 deposit taking ATM's by the Bank.
According to Barclays, the machines will be located in some areas in Accra, Cape Coast, Ho and Kumasi. Managing Director, Benjamin Debrah tells JOYBUSINESS they just want to provide convenience to the banking public.
“We have finished the pilot phase and are going live. So far we have deployed 8 of the 30 ATMs in various onsite locations – that is attached to one of our branches. We are also reviewing the security arrangements at all our offsite ATM’s and the need for intelligent services the ATM’s provides.
"We call them intelligent ATMS and not just cash-accepting ATM’s because there are other advanced features they offer such as dispensing cash without necessarily using an ATM card. An example is a soon-to-be introduced SMS service which would enable a customer send money to another person who can withdraw from one of these ATM’s without necessarily using the customer’s ATM card or PIN" he explained.
Ghana Commercial Bank last year announced plans to introduce the machines, but it now appears Barclays has beaten them to it.
Banking lecturer and consultant, Nana Otuo Acheampong, has told JOYBUSINESS the move by the two banks will go a long way to enhance banking experience in the country by reducing the long queues usually in banking halls.
