Many drug addicts in the country who are desperate to kick the habit cannot do so, not because of the nature of the addiction, but because there are very few facilities set up to help them to do so.Ghana has only two national rehabilitation centres which cater for the numerous numbers that need reform from the effects of drug abuse.Medical Director at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Akwasi Osei, tells Joy News the two centres at the Ankafo and Pantang hospitals can accommodate about 80 addicts which means others seeking help will have to wait till there is enough space.Dr. Osei’s comments come at the back of concerns raised by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo that the absence of proper reform infrastructure is hindering the fight against drug trafficking, in the country. In a related development, residents of Chorkor Mantsue a suburb of Accra are worried about the increase in drug menace in the area.It has been something they have been fighting for years now. Many of the youth in the area are said to be involved in this act.But what makes it dangerous is that most of these people smoke in open even when kids are around exposing them to smoke.
