Shell Ghana, in collaboration with Newmont Golden Ridge Limited, a mining company in Ghana, has donated eco-friendly cooking stoves and lamps to selected communities in the New Abriem District of Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.
200 households in 10 communities within the New Abirem District were identified as the pilot beneficiaries of the Envirofit Clean Cook Stoves and solar lamps.
The eco-friendly stoves, according to Shell Ghana and Newmont, will improve quality of health and indoor air pollution, while preventing climate change and protecting women and children.
The solar, eco-friendly lamp requires no battery replacement for at least 4 years, and uses LED bulbs and solar panels which can last several years.
The solar lamp, according to Newmont Golden Ridge Limited, is designed to be durable and easy to operate and is a healthy alternative to kerosene lanterns.
The presentations which took place on Wednesday May 29, is part of Shell Ghana's efforts to help meet the rising energy demand in a responsible way.
The presentation is also aimed at affirming Shell Ghana’s desire to operate safely, by minimising environmental impact on the environment, and building trust with the communities where they operate.
Speaking at the event, Director for Shell Ghana, Mr. Augustine Osei-Bonsu said “At Shell, our ability to engage effectively with our neighbors in the communities where we operate on issues that concern them is essential to our business.”
The presentation also forms part Shell Ghana’s Breathing Spaces Program and Energy for Education Program both aimed at improving the quality of lives of people while contributing to the reduction in their carbon footprint.
