The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has been discussing the possibility of tariff adjustment being demanded by utility providers.
The providers have argued that the current tariffs paid by consumers are unrealistic and only an adjustment can save the companies from further losses.
But even before the PURC comes with a decision on the demand by the utilities providers, the chairman Of Parliament Select Committee on Energy and Mines, Dr. Kwabena Donkor is alleging the country is losing its economic competitiveness and warns of dire consequences if the adjustment is not announced soon.
He told Joy News’ Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey the PURC should be blamed for the acrimony associated with discussions on the adjustment.
Dr. Kwabena Donkor remarked that the “most critical thing is saving the institutions. We save the institution and then demand service improvement”.
He said even though everybody deserves quality service, “we don’t demand this from an institution that is dying; it is dying because we are bleeding it”.
He demanded that the PURC engaged the public on the real issue. He believed the public is intelligent enough to make objective assessment of the situation.
