British carrier, Virgin Atlantic has indicated it might resume operations to Accra if conditions that caused its exit improve. The British carrier, yesterday announced that it is suspending its operations to Accra from September 23. The airline cites high fuel cost in Ghana as one of major reasons for their exit. It also cited its inability to operate morning arrivals from Accra due to scarcity of slots at Heathrow Edmond Rose, Director Airline Planning at Virgin Atlantic told Joy Business: "In the future, we will keep looking at what is the right moment to come back. It won’t be the next two, three years perhaps but certainly there are some great things going on in the Ghanaian economy and when the conditions are ripe we will come back again." Virgin Atlantic in May 2010 began operations to Accra, joining British Airways who were the only operator on the Accra-London route. Meanwhile, the airline's exit could see the country lose some revenue in terms of taxes the airline pays: that is handling and landing parking charges and navigation fuel charges. The airline also employs about 16 persons, who could be made redundant as a result of Virgins' move.
