Ghana sports minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has hailed the decision by Andre and Jordan Ayew to return to the national team after holding a meeting with the country’s leader. The Sports Minister and the Ghana FA vice President Fred Crentsil were summoned to a meeting with the two brothers by President John Mahama on Tuesday afternoon. The Marseille duo first met the President during his recent visit to France where they spoke about their premature retirement from the national team. Following the meeting with all the parties involved, the Ayews agreed to rescind their decision which means they will be available for selection for the Black Stars henceforth. Mr. Ankrah said the President had intervened because he believes Ghana must draw on the strength of all available players. “When the President went to France he met the Ayew brothers and talked to them,” said Ankrah. “We have had fruitful discussions with them and they have agreed to come back unconditionally. It is a great day for Ghana football. “We want the best players for Ghana and we should work hard to make them available for the country.” Andre quit the national team claiming he was unhappy over some of the management members of the team. The 23-year-old was axed from Ghana’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad after failing to report in time for the pre-tournament camping base in Abu Dhabi, UAE. His brother Jordan simultaneously rendered in his resignation insisting he wants to be guaranteed first team place after being excluded from the squad. The announcement by the players means they will be available for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Zambia in September. Whether national coach Kwesi Appiah will call on their services is another matter.
