Two suspected armed robbers were yesterday killed in a shoot-out with the police at Bosom Abena, near Kasoa, in the Central Region.
The deceased have been identified only as Scary, 27, and Saah, 36.
The bodies have since been deposited at the Police Hospital in Accra.
A police officer, Constable Joseph Obise, also sustained gunshot wounds in the process.
Briefing
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Cape Coast yesterday, the Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Irene Serwaa Oppong said about 1:30 a.m. yesterday, a group of about 10 masked men, suspected to be armed robbers, attacked workers of a Chinese company, F&J Rock Quarry, with pump action guns and pistols.
The suspects ordered the workers and the Chinese owners, whose residence is on the premises of the company, to surrender their phones and money.
The armed men also demanded that their captives take them to where the company’s money was kept.
The workers were subsequently rescued by two police guards at the company after the suspects engaged them in a shoot-out leading to the death of the robbers and injury to one of the officers. None of the workers was harmed or injured in the attack.
According to Mrs Oppong, the suspects managed to bolt with the constable’s rifle with an empty magazine.
A search conducted on one of the deceased led to the retrieval of four mobile phones suspected to be stolen items.
Crime scene
The Crime Officer of the Kasoa Divisional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Dwomoh Owusu, said his outfit responded to a call by the police guards for a beef-up but upon arrival at the scene, the suspects had fled on their motorbikes.
He said a loaded pistol and 10 spent shells were, however, retrieved from the scene.
Mr Owusu said investigations were underway to apprehend the other suspects and called on the public with information on the robbers to contact the Kasoa police or any nearest police station.
