The Accra Circuit Court yesterday sentenced six armed robbers to a total of 240 years imprisonment with hard labour. They are Gabriel Kojo Agyemang, Peter Akakpo, Ernest Nana Kwame Acheampong, Vincent Agbetorglo, Robert Tawiah and Danlad Seidu Drumah. They are to serve 40 years each in prison. The convicts, armed with guns, machetes and knives, attacked their victims at the Parakuo Estate in Accra on February 25, 2011.They each pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy and robbery, but the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, found them guilty on both counts after a full trial.Sentence
Each of the convicts was sentenced to 20 years on the count of conspiracy and 40 years on that of robbery. The sentences are to run concurrently.Passing judgement, the trial judge said armed robbery was on the ascendency and cited media reports of the killing of a Metro Mass Transit driver by armed robbers over the weekend.According to the court, the prosecution was able to prove the guilt of the robbers beyond reasonable doubt.Earlier, a Chief State Attorney, Ms Winifred Sarpong, had prayed the court to hand down a harsher sentence to the robbers because they had four other robbery cases pending in different courts.
