Food and Agricultural Organization(FAO) is asking Ghana to fix challenges of the country's food distribution system since the nation loses huge chunk of food it produces.
The Country Director of the FAO, Dr. Lamourdia Thiombiano says government needs to prioritise agriculture and develop feasible policies in terms of planning, institutional building and budget.
Dr. Thiombianoa was speaking to Joy News on the sidelines of a forum on Food Security held at the University of Ghana
He added that the money allocated to the agriculture sector should align with the level of priority.
"We need to see food production in a more holistic manner approach," he said.
Agriculturalists and Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Kwadwo Asenso Okyere asked government to inject more efficiency into the Agricultural extension programme, as a way to deal with the problem.
According to Prof. Okyere, more than 30% of food produced is lost through the distribution process- from the farmer to the consumer- stressing calling on government to work on wholesaling and storage facilities.
He urged government not to only concentrate on food production but also focus on processing, storage and transportation to avoid the losses recorded.
