Mr Peter Dakurah, Northern Zonal Manager of Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), has advised women not to insert foreign materials into their vagina as it could lead to offensive odour and bacterial infection.
He said the vagina has a mechanism to cleanse itself and therefore requires no chemicals or materials to be able to do so.
Mr Dakurah gave the advice at a day’s training workshop for journalists on reporting on sexual productive health rights issues organised in Tamale by the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC), a civil society organisation.
The training, formed part of the Family Reproductive Health Rights Programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health being implemented by ISODEC and its partners in deprived communities in northern Ghana.
The objective is to improve and expand sexual rights, services and needs of vulnerable women.
Mr Dakurah cautioned against traditional practices such as female genital mutilation since it could caused excessive bleeding during child birth leading to death.
Madam Agnes Gandaa, Coordinator of Northern Ghana Programme of ISODEC said: “An enlightened journalist can help to properly present issues and hence the training.”
She asked the media to be part of the project and contribute to the advocacy efforts on the essence of reproductive sexual health rights.
