President John Mahama has described as “sweet victory”, Ghana’s defeat of Zambia in Friday’s World Cup qualifier played in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.
The Black Stars beat the Chipolopolo boys by 2 – 1.
“It was a sweet victory”, Mr. Mahama wrote on his facebook page after the game.
He said: “Congratulations to our players”, but added that: “…there is more work ahead”.
The victory qualifies Ghana to the play-offs of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Africa after Spartak Moscow striker Abdul Majeed Waris and Kwadwo Asamoah gave the Stars a win with Sinkala pulling one back.
A goal apiece in each half by Majeed Warris and Kwadwo Asamoah was enough to withstand a second half Chipolopolo fight back through Nathan Sinkala.
The second round will see the Stars play a two-leg play-off for a place at next year's final in Brazil.
Expressing his happiness with Ghana’s victory on facebook, Mr. Mahama posted a picture taken of him while celebrating Kwadwo Asamoah's goal.
He wrote that: “I love this photograph taken when I sprang out of my chair to celebrate that long range shot from Asamoah”.
