KOICA Ghana Office under the auspices of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ghana finds it necessary to respond and correct some of the issues in Isaac Nongya’s piece “Infectious disease treatment Centre left to rot after ¢70k-worth equipment stolen” published by Myjoyonline.com on 28th February, 2020.
We kindly ask Myjoyonline.com and Joy News to revise the article to reflect the facts below.
1. KOICA only constructed the facility and provided a water tanker. The equipment in the facility was provided by KOSMOS Energy to the Ministry of Health. The stolen equipment is not anywhere related to KOICA’s support at all.
2. The Center has not been optimally operationalized due to the bad road network from Tamale Teaching Hospital as well as the main Vittin Road. Through the Ministry’s intervention, Urban Roads have come to its aid and the road to the facility is part of the roads currently under construction.
3. It was agreed after the commissioning of the Centre in 2017 by the Ministry and Tamale Teaching Hospital to use the facility for training purposes until there is outbreak where the facility will be fully functional as an emergency response centre.
4. The Center is connected to water and electricity.
5. KOICA and the United States of America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) teamed up in 2018 to support the Government of Ghana towards the achievement of the International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005 through the implementation of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). Under this project, the Center will be operationalized and key deliverables under the phase two of the IDTC include provision equipment and training for personnel.
6. The reporter did not reach out to any official from KOICA Ghana Office. So, the statement that KOICA declined to comment in the report is not true. We would have wished for the reporter to contact us first before the story was published for more accurate information.
