Various departments at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital appear to be charging the new fees described as illegal despite a directive from the board of directors to suspend the new service charges. The chairman of the Board, Eddy Annan yesterday directed the hospital to stop charging the new fees because a request for same it is yet to receive parliamentary approval. Mr. Annan told Joy News on Wednesday that the hospital will stop the implementation of the new fees and in fact, refund monies already paid. But patients who visited the facility Thursday morning said they were still being charged the unapproved fees. Joy News’ Beatrice Adu was at the hospital to independently verify the failure to revert to the old fees. An incognito interview with personnel at the information desk at one of the departments revealed that patients seeking healthcare for the first time in the hospital were made to pay GHø18 instead of GHø9 for a folder. Some patients she also talked to, confirmed that they were asked to pay the new fees. According to one of them, Nurses at the wards announced in the morning that without the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card, the hospital will take GHø18 for a new folder. However, when Beatrice visited the public relations department of the hospital, she was told that management were not aware that the departments were still sticking to the new charges. The reporter was shown a statement meant for the public in which the management apologized to the public for charging the unapproved fees. The management in the statement said they regret what happened. Meanwhile the Finance Ministry has said it is not responsible for the illegal fees being charged by the Hospital. Director of Budget at the Ministry, Patrick Nimoh said a letter to the hospital only communicated how far the process for the new fees had travelled in parliament. He insisted there was no directive for the new fees to be charged. He was speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show. Play the attached audio for the full report
