Gender advocate and human rights activist, Angela Dwamena Aboagye has challenged women to be bold and walk out of relationships that threaten their lives.
According to her, it will be better for women to save their lives than to fulfill expectations of society to stay in such relationships.
Her comment follows a murder attempt on the life of a 33-year old woman by her ex-husband in the Ashanti region. Salamatu Ahmed suffered cuts in the neck and on a finger as she struggled to save herself from Ibrahim Danso who attempted to slit her throat with a kitchen knife while she was sleeping.
The incident occurred at Adankwame in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region. Her relatives are accepting blame for the incident that nearly cost the woman’s life.
The victim’s family says failure to dissolve the marriage after persistent complaints from the woman, gave rise to the latest ordeal.
But speaking to Joy News, Angela Dwamena Aboagye said it is wrong for women to stay in such relationships. She said "abuse of partners often takes a cyclical form".
"Once it starts it will never stop...even God cannot change that person from abusing his partner until that person realises that I need to do something about this myself.
"If you are in a relationship in which this person is always asking; where did you go, where have you been to, who did you see, who did you speak to, who is calling you on your phone...you should know these are red flags," Mrs. Dwamena Aboagye cautioned.
