Black Stars Coach Akwasi Appiah has played down the significance of the potentially historic feat of being the first local coach to qualify Ghana to the World Cup.
He said personal glory for him is secondary to the dream of making all Ghanaians happy.
Ghana is looking ahead to making a third consecutive appearance at the World Cup and has an Egyptian hurdle to cross on Tuesday and later in Cairo. The last two Ghana World Cup feats had two foreign coaches, Ratormir Dujkovic and Milovan Rajevac being the architects.
Appiah had the opportunity of serving under Rajevac as the assistant Black Stars coach but now looks poised to lead the team to another World Cup as the substantive coach.
Speaking at the pre-match conference ahead of the crucial World Cup play-off against Egypt in Kumasi on Tuesday a seemingly selfless Appiah told the media his ultimate dream is to make all Ghanaians happy.
“Qualifying Ghana to the World Cup is on the heart of all Ghanaians. The ambition of every coach in Ghana is to ensure that we qualify to the World Cup.
“Our prayer is that God stays behind us and we go into the game to get a win for all Ghanaians and not for me alone,” Appiah said.
Despite losing four regular defenders Appiah is upbeat abot keeping the attacking repertoire of the Egyptians in check.
The skipper of the side Asamoah Gyan who was part of the press conference rallied support from all Ghanaians before during and after the game.
He said when the going gets tough that is when the fans are needed most to cheer the team on, adding if there are criticisms, fans must wait till after the game.
He added it will be a great achievement as a young captain to lead the team to Brazil.
