Police in Effiakuma, a suburb of Takoradi have retrieved the body of a thirteen year old girl who allegedly committed suicide on Friday morning. The deceased, Salamatu Yakubu, a primary six pupil of the Azariah Islamic School in the community, was found hanging with a tiny rope in an uncompleted building close to her house.
It is not clear yet what might have compelled the deceased to take her own life since no suicide note was found at the scene. The entire largely Muslim community and the household where she resides with her mother, was thrown into a state of shock when Maxx News arrived at the scene.
A woman who claims to be the mother of the deceased, Fusenatu Dauda, could not hold back her tears as she spoke to Maxx News.
“She is the one who sweeps the compound, but this morning my sister realized she hadn’t swept so she thought that perhaps she had visited the toilet. So my sister did the sweeping herself. After that, she went into an uncompleted building to get coconut husk to set fire for cooking. It was in that building that she saw our daughter hanging. So my sister started screaming and some neighbors helped to bring the body into the room. There is nothing wrong with her. She is not sick. Everyone lives at peace with her in this whole compound. There has not been any complaint from her school as well. She is very intelligent so her teachers are so fond of her”.
The deceased has been conveyed to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for autopsy and subsequent burial in line with Islamic tradition.
Meanwhile some neighbors told Maxx News the deceased may have suffered some psychological problems. They claim they often found her walking for long distances whiles uttering words to herself.
