The Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) is appalled with the manner in which government is handling the latest corruption saga involving Subah Infosolutions.
Vitus Azeem says it is not enough for the Finance Ministry to say that it stopped payment to the company in 2013 after realising the company was not doing the job for which it was contracted.
What about the monies paid to the company already, he questioned in an interview on Citi FM.
Subah InfoSolutions Ltd was contracted by the Ghana Revenue Authority in 2010 to monitor and verify the volume of calls generated by telecom companies for tax purposes.
The IT company was paid four million Ghana cedis monthly totalling Ghc144 million over the period.
The Chronicle Newspaper broke the news about the payment of the money and the boss of the GRA, Mr George Blankson has since confirmed the allegation.
The payment raises lots of concerns about how monies belonging to the state are dissipated, critics have said.
Vitus Azeem wondered why the Finance Ministry reacted only after the Chronicle newspaper brought the issue to the public domain.
"Were they trying to keep it a secret", he wondered, insisting, the issue was more to do about how to retrieve the monies paid to Subah InfoSolutions than just the Finance Ministry stopping the payment.
He said the main purpose of getting the company was because the GRA did not trust the Telcos to get the accurate information on calls generated by them and so if the company also failed to provide the accurate information then what was the point in contracting and paying them.
He charged government to do far more than it is doing to unravel the mystery behind the payment.
