As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the year 2013, GOIL has provided portable drinking water to five communities in the Eastern and Volta Regions.
The oil and gas company provided mechanized boreholes with storage tank capacity of 500 litres (111gallons) each.
The communities include Aboasa and Apegusu Senior High School (Girls' Dormitory) in the Eastern Region and Fintey, Ave Wukpe and Dorfor Tagadzi in the Volta Region.
These communities, though close to the River Volta, do not have access to treated or pipe-borne water.
According to the company, five other communities in the Greater Accra Region would also benefit from their CSR activities before the end of the year.
A team of GOIL staff, led by the Managing Director, Mr. Patrick Akorli commissioned and handed over the mechanized boreholes to the various communities.
In a brief speech by Mr. Patrick Akorli, he explained that GOIL, as a way of giving back to the deprived communities and sharing its "Good Energy" decided to reach out and touch the lives of these communities.
He indicated that no amount of money would be enough to go round the communities, but water is sure to do so. "Water is Life" he said.
The Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Cyril Opon advised the community elders and leaders to charge a token from the town folks which would be used as service charge for the maintenance of the facilities, to ensure continuous water supply.
Community elders and opinion leaders in the beneficiary communities expressed appreciation at the gesture.
They explained that children had to travel miles to get clean water even though their communities were lined along the banks of the Volta River. They promised to take good care of the boreholes and even requested for additional ones in other parts of the community.
