Gold Fields Ghana Limited has denied reports suggesting that it is considering closing down its Damang Mine in Ghana.
The company in a release said: "At the release of Gold Fields Q3 Results on 20 November 2013, the company’s CEO Nick Holland made the following statement on the status of the Damang Mine:
'At Damang the focus remains on improving operational performance through improved quality mining and more consistent plant availability.
'The work to determine if it is economically viable to extract all or part of the four million ounce reserve continues, with a decision on the future of the mine expected in the first half of 2014.
'If a viable sustainable operational plan cannot be developed for this mine, care and maintenance will be considered.”
The release said "a more detailed policy statement will be issued in the first half of next year".
