Former President John Mahama has indicated that he will seek to end the “disturbing” public discourse generated as a result of Otumfuo's speech at the UN.
Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, had stated during his speech that his respected Manhyia Palace intervened to persuade the losing candidate in the 2016 general elections to accept defeat.
However, former Chief of Staff Mr Julius Debrah, released a statement explaining the former president willingly accepted defeat and congratulated then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
John Mahama, in a Facebook post, mentioned that the statement from his office was not to belittle Otumfuo's efforts at promoting national peace and unity but to bring clarity to the fact that he was not interested in holding “on to power unconstitutionally, as some media houses sought to infer from Otumfuo's speech at the UN.”
He explained that recent reports and public discourse seek to mar the long-standing relationship he has with the Asantehene.
“I have profound respect for Otumfuo and Asanteman and will not allow this issue to mar our long-standing cordial relationship. On Otumfuo's return home, we will take the necessary steps to bring closure to this matter,” he added.
