As Ghana commemorates Nkrumah Memorial Day Monday, politicians have been urged to stop using the youth as electoral weapons.
Instead, Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, wants politics to be used as a vehicle that drives development for young people.
Speaking on “Joy Time in His Presence” on Joy FM, he said, “we are abusing young people in politics, this is a country where we know how to send ballot boxes to every corner of the country, whether the roads are good or not but we don’t know how to send development to communities.
“When it is election we know how to mobilize people and young people can call politicians anytime. But this is a country politicians don’t know how to reach out to young people.”
Opuni-Frimpong who is also Co-coordinator of Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa said what the youth need is “not talk” but the leadership of action.
“2020 is coming, let us be a country that gives hope and leadership. Bring us manifestoes but back your hopes with actions,” he urged politicians.
Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong wants the Nkrumah Memorial Day to be dedicated to the development of the youth.
”I want us to dedicate this day to young people. We must be a country that gives opportunities to young people: the young people who are on our streets, who are hawking, who are unemployed. Can this country produce many more presidents from dishwashers?" he quizzed.
