Adolescent girls with various forms of disabilities in the Bosome-Freho District of the Ashanti region are benefitting from a Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) project which seeks their social inclusion in society.
The Rights and Responsibilities Initiative Ghana (RRIG) is a five-year project which is aimed at equipping adolescent girls, including disabled girls with accurate information about their sexual and reproductive health.
This is to enable them to make informed decisions when they find themselves in compromising situations.
The project is targeting adolescent girls with a disability who are often excluded from such programmes despite being the most vulnerable.
Programmes Manager of RRIG, Faustina Osei Prempeh said, “They are always left behind when it comes to empowerment and social interventions so we are bringing them on board as part of this project to make them feel part of us.”
This is a means to reduce teenage pregnancy in the district which has had one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the region.
One of such sessions has been held at Asiwa where the girls played various games as a form of entertainment and socialisation outside their homes.
Health professionals from the District Health Directorate, were also on hand to educate them on personal hygiene and reproductive health issues.
Ms Prempeh’s team is also working closely with their parents by encouraging them to support the girls to learn a trade to become independent.Latest Stories
