Aspiring Ashanti regional chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has defended his philanthropic decision to donate a three-storey building, as direction from God.
Despite concerns that his gesture amounts to vote-buying, Benard Antwi-Boasiako tells Joy News Thursday "it is God who directs me" so he did it with a clear conscience. As and when God directs him, he will give to the party, he said.
The contestant, popularly known as "Chairman Wontumi" last Thursday donated an imposing building to the party at a colourful ceremony in Kumasi, Ashanti regional capital and a stronghold of the opposition party.

The rented building was received by the regional chairman of the party Frederick Fredua Anto, who commended Wontumi for his immense love and passion for the growth of the NPP, urging other party members to emulate his shining example.
But his opponent and former deputy Attorney General under the John Kufuor administration, Osei Kwame Prempeh has described the gesture as "unethical".
“They are trying by everything to corrupt the system; everything has been skewed against me,” he complained.
Chairman Wontumi is unfazed by this criticism.
Recounting such philanthropy at the constituency, regional and national levels, he says he constructed an office in Bosomtwi constituency, assisted in getting another for Asawase constituency and procured a 11-bedroom house at East Legon for the party's national leadership.
He called on his critics to also help the party in stocking the new regional office with furniture.
