The parliamentary select committee on housing has assured displaced residents of Adjei Kojo it will promptly submit its findings to parliament to begin investigations into the demolition exercise carried out there by the Tema Development Corporation two months ago.
The committee after a number of botched attempts finally managed to visit the area on Monday March 10, 2014 to assess the situation.
The”ˆdirective to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing for the Adjei Kojo demolition to be investigated came from the Speaker of Parliament after the Tema West MP, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, in a statement on the floor of parliament, condemned the exercise carried out by TDC
The select committee was at Adjei Kojo, Promised Land and Solomon City where over 300 houses were pulled down in the demolotisionexercise about two months ago.
Residents lamented they have since been living in a very deplorable state and continue to face abuse from armed security men, both night and day and were hopeful the visit will bring them some peace.
“We trust their judgment and hope they will tell parliament exactly what they have seen”
Others were also optimistic and said “All we want is our land back, so we can begin putting up temporal structures on them, don’t want any resettlement elsewhere, we want our land”
Hon. Joseph Osei-Owusu a member of the parliamentary select committee on works and housing; stressed that committee will assess the situation and advice parliament accordingly.
The Chairman for the committee David Assumeng after touring the areas expressed worry at the site and assured residents the matter will be taken on: “Assessing the situation I don’t think it is the best, we will advise parliament to act immediately”
He noted the Tema Development Corporation has submitted all relevant documents to the committee and urged the chiefs contending over the land to submit its documents to the committee as early as possible.
